While it’s the same species as red foxes, a specific mutation causes it to stand out. As you can see, this mutation results in a rich black coat with silver-tipped hair widely scattered throughout. There’s also some white coloring at the tip of its tail. Due to a little something called pelt variation, in certain cases, silver foxes may possess bluish-gray fur as well. The mutation in question is called melanism and is essentially the opposite of albinism. Meaning that instead of a lack of melanin, there’s an abundance of it. Now, from the little we know of these things, mutations don’t happen often. Sometimes they’ll even skip a few generations. As a result of this, silver-coated foxes make up a small percentage of the total red fox population. Apart from how genes mutate, this may also be due to the fact that in the 1900s, they were hunted to near extinction. As per reports, at the time their numbers dwindled from 15 percent to five due to overhunting. However, seeing that their pelts are still highly prized, this is likely to change. Simply put, breeding efforts might cause their numbers to expand. Here’s hoping! Although let’s not forget that they’re believed to bring bad luck. We’ve had enough of that these past few years. Pink Grasshoppers Say what you will, but silver is still a believable color for an animal to have. Do you know which color would be actually unbelievable A bright pink. Trust us. If we hadn’t read up on erythrism, we wouldn’t have bought the existence of this pick even for a second. Or any of the upcoming pink animals, for that matter. But they exist. They’re rare, we mean. But they’re out there. On that note, meet the pink grasshopper. As we explained before, its color is the result of a congenital condition called erythrism. This condition, from what we know, gives a reddish pigmentation to the animal’s skin. While it’s primarily an inborn complication, it sometimes also occurs in animals that largely feed on red plants. For instance, bees feed on red corn syrup. Now, since pink foliage is still unheard of, it’s very difficult for these creatures to camouflage themselves. In consequence, they’re more vulnerable to attack and don’t survive into adulthood. This also largely factors into their rarity. So if you ever come across one, just send it to your nearest insect sanctuary. Or if you’re into exotic pets, keep them.
